Here are a few paintings from this last month in Minnesota and Wisconsin. The fall colors here have been gorgeous--unfortunately the weather has been spotty so I didn't get out as much as I wanted to. I can cope with temperature and even light drizzle, but wind and occasional blowing rain really makes things miserable when working outdoors.
Autumn Spread. 11x14 in., oil on panel.

I set up this still life and painted it after sundown one evening. Autumn makes me think of root vegetables--acorn squash, and a few fine tubers I still need to roast up.
Hartley Pond. 12x16 in., oil on panel.

We found a really nice hiking trail a few weeks ago, and I went back to paint this pond there a few days later. The colors in the water were so rich and I used a few touches of pure cobalt violet in the water nearest the shore.

I thought the color of the trees below me on the hillside was very striking compared to the overcast light of the day. A lot of tourists stopped and spoke to me that day. Duluth is a very popular destination for seeing the fall colors every year (If you ask me, the best colors were actually a ways south of town). Even though I didn't get out to paint as much as I wished, I was able to get some good photos of the maple, birch, and alder trees with their brilliant yellow and red leaves on a few hikes my wife and I took... I may try to make some paintings from the photos in the coming months.
